The violin is a string instrument, usually with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. It is the smallest, highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola, cello, and double bass. A violin typically consists of a spruce top (the soundboard, also known as the top plate, table, or belly), maple ribs and back, a neck, a bridge, four strings, and various fittings, optionally including a chinrest, which may attach directly over, or to the left of, the tailpiece.

How to determine what size violin you need:

Violins are available in 8 different sizes: 4/4 (also called full size), 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/16 and 1/32. Size 4/4 is the biggest and size 1/32 is the smallest. All adults, regardless of their sizes, use the size 4/4 violin.
To measure what size violin best suits you, you need to know the length between your neck and the middle of your left-hand palm (when your hand is fully extended and raised perpendicular to your body, just like holding a violin). If you have a teacher, you should ask for your teacher′s recommendation. If you don′t have a teacher, we would recommend using the neck/wrist approach for students instead of using full size.

The following table lists the length of each violin size. Find your length by using your preferred approach and use that to determine the size of violin to get.

How to Protect Your Violin:

1. After you use it, you should wipe the rosin power on the violin fingerboard, violin string and violin body with a dry and soft cloth, so as not to affect the violin sounds clear and even the performance results caused by long accumulated.
2. After the violin is used for a long time, dust and rosin power accumulated in the violin belly, then what you have to do is to remove them every once in a while. One way is to pour clean and dry rice into the violin belly, and shake the violin body all around, finally pour out the rice with dust.
3. Please place the violin in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture and bonding gap. And the string should be looser in the rainy season.

The FAQ of Violin:

What should we do with the cracked violin?
  • The humid conditions could cause the violin seams to open between front and rib.
  • First of all, damp cracked part of violin with wet gauze in order to remove old glue completely, and use the special fish glue to repair cracks on your violin after dry.
  • Then, clamp it firmly with the chinrest after gluing it, and fix it for a period of time.

What to do with the fallen sound post?

  • First, get the sound post out of the sound hole.
  • Second, keep the sound post vertically and stick the setter′s sharp end into one side of post. The setter should be approximately 1/4 of the way from the top of the post.
  • Third, put the post into the violin′s right f-hole and keep the sound post upright when it is beneath the violin′s bridge.
  • Fourth, side the sound post toward the right foot of the bridge, moving it under the foot and toward the tailpiece, about 5mm away from the bridge.

What to do with the broken rubber band on the tailpiece?

  • Use the new rubber band with the same length to penetrate through the hole of tailpiece, tighten the rubber band with wire, light a match to dry the end of rubber band until it expands with heat, and turns off, so that the rubber band cannot easily get out of the tailpiece under powerful pulling force.

What to do with the old bow hair of violin?

  • The bow hair will inevitably be coated with dirt or oil for the use of a longer time, so it need to be completely cleaned.
  • First, wet the bow hair with warm water, apply soap, knead the hair gently with your fingers, then rinse it in two or three fresh waters and dry with clean cloth.
  • Second, it is difficult to cover with the rosin when the bow hair becomes smooth for the use of a longer time. It′s a good idea to change the bow hair.

NOTE:

Be careful not to snag your bowstring on the fastener when you take it out of the violin box.A new bowstring is loose before you rosin the bow, and please take the bow out carefully and gently.
